LIVE NJ MOSQUITO PRESSURE

New Jersey Mosquito Risk Today

A practical statewide estimate that combines New Jersey seasonality with current central New Jersey weather conditions. It is designed to answer one question: should mosquito pressure feel quiet, building or intense right now?

THE QUICK ANSWER

Warmth, humidity, rainfall and seasonality all influence backyard mosquito pressure. This score is an informational estimate—not a public-health alert or a substitute for local surveillance.

01

How the score works

The Jersey Mosquito Risk Index begins with a seasonal baseline and adjusts it using current National Weather Service conditions near central New Jersey. The model looks at temperature, relative humidity and precipitation probability, then converts that context into a 0–100 pressure estimate.

  • 0–24: Low
  • 25–49: Building
  • 50–74: Elevated
  • 75–100: High

What can make your yard worse than the statewide score

A statewide estimate cannot see your gutters, drains, ivy, shaded beds, neighboring containers or low spots. A property with dense shade and persistent water can feel much worse than the regional weather would suggest.

03

What can make your yard better

Airflow, fewer water-holding containers, clear gutters, corrected drainage and less dense resting habitat can reduce the conditions mosquitoes use even when regional pressure is elevated.

04

How to use the score

Use it as context, not a diagnosis. If the score is elevated and your yard suddenly gets worse, inspect for new water after rain. If the score is low but one corner of the yard is still intense, focus on that micro-habitat.

IMPORTANT

This is not a disease-risk score.

Mosquito abundance and mosquito-borne disease surveillance are different questions. For public-health information, use NJDEP, NJ Department of Health and county mosquito-control resources.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What homeowners usually ask next

Why use central New Jersey weather?

It gives the index a stable statewide reference point. New Jersey is small enough that it provides useful context, but coastal, northern and urban conditions can still differ.

Does a high score mean mosquitoes are carrying disease?

No. The score estimates mosquito pressure, not pathogen activity or human health risk.

How often does it update?

Weather data are cached for several hours to keep the site fast and avoid unnecessary external requests.
